Understanding the Distinction Between Adware, Spyware and Anti-virus

Adware, spyware and computer viruses share some similarities, one of which is that all three are a major irritation source for computer users. Although they are similar in some ways, there are distinct differences between each of them.

First we should discuss Spywares, which are software programs that are not created to deliberately damage your computer. What they do is create pathways wherein someone else aside from the computer owner can communicate with the computer. Normally spywares record the various types of web sites you visit which are later used by web advertisers to allow them to send you unwanted emails and pop-ups.

This is the reason spyware upsets most users and the reason they try to completely avoid it from coming up. It is much more of invasive software than adware. The task of spyware is to carry out mini-programs that are intrusive to your computer, because they work to find out what files are on your hard disks, monitoring your cookies, web browsers setting, as well as, collect other program information.

The information gathered from the spyware will then be sent to the spyware author. The agent will then use this information for advertising and marketing purposes. Spyware companies often sell the information they collect from your computer to other companies that will use it to send you unsolicited ads.

Next we should look at Adware, which is consider by some to be a more legitimate form of software. Adware’s are similar to spyware in some ways because they both use advertising materials, however, adware will only come up after you install a particular program or new software to your computer system. You may even find that some adware’s download new pop-ups while your are using certain applications and not just during the initial install. Unfortunately, another thing adware has in common with spyware is, they both are used to sell the information they gather to outsider advertisers.

Spyware infections on the other hand, is often discovered by pop-up ads that don’t relate to what you are viewing on the web and if that happens it is a good chance your computer has some sort of intrusive spyware. Many times spyware pop-ups are adult oriented, often repulsive and very frustrating. Also, if you notice your computer slowing down, there’s a big chance that spyware and its other components have found their way into your operating system. If your Windows desktop begins to take a long time to load you may have a spyware infection and should check for any infections in your system.

Finally we need to discuss computer Viruses, all of which are a destructive form of software. Someone, somewhere designed a program to create chaos and possibly even destroy data on your computer. Most viruses are designed to self-replicate, infect and destroy as many specific computer files or networked systems as possible and within a very short period of time.

Often today, a lot of anti-virus software programs also provide spyware and adware scanning removal utilities. You may also want to purchase a program which will work to just locate, delete and destroy any spyware or adware software found. Whether it is anti-virus or anti-spyware software dedicated scanner, they both search your computer and identify any spyware or virus installed on your system.

They will remove all spyware and/or adware and work to detect anything else that is attached to that malicious program effecting your system. It is a good idea and certainly worth the time invested to help keep your computer free of spyware and other viruses by updating your anti-virus software and definition files regularly. Never be fooled from ads that claim that their products only contains adware.

These adware programs may be spyware in disguise and are just waiting to be deployed to gather your information. It is important therefore, to learn how to setup a system firewall and always turn on your pop-up blockers to minimize computer infection and ensure the security of all your computer files.
