This is information that is important for you and your children to be aware of, and so discussed here in detail will be the exact steps that you should take if you ever hear your smoke detector beeping.
It is always a good idea for families to sit down and talk about what they would do to escape a fire. This is obviously not you want to have to think about, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Know Your Way Out
The most important thing that you can teach your children is how to get out of the home if they hear the smoke detector beeping. It is important to learn and remember the different ways out of your home, and so if there are various different exits you need to be aware of which is going to be the best exit, depending on where the fire is in the home.
If you are in a room with the door closed when you hear a smoke detector beeping, first you need to check to see if there is heat or smoke coming in from the cracks around the door. This will tell you that the fire is close or that it is really bad because there is so much smoke.
If you don’t see smoke you can try touching the door but be careful because it could be very hot. If it is hot you do not want to open the door because this could end up being very dangerous.
Also when you hear a smoke detector beeping you want to make sure that you help anyone else in the home out if there are other people, such as children.
You always need to stay low. If you can see smoke in the home, stay as low to the ground as possible, and then make your way to an exit. This way you will hopefully be underneath of the smoke so that you can see and are not inhaling dangerous smoke.
Smoke naturally rises and so if there is smoke while you are using your escape route, staying low means that you can crawl underneath most of it.
